Convection in the stairwell at Rindermarkt 16 caused the temperature of the upper floors to increase in summer. The staircase was rebuilt in 2014 and equipped with a large skylight. The Alpha Immobilien Consulting GmbH was commissioned to investigate how a controlled ventilation of the staircase would lead to a reduction in upper floor room temperatures. The study was performed using dynamic thermal building simulation. The simulation software IDA ICE 4.7 from EQUA Solutions was used to examine the three dimension-al space using data on relevant design parameters. An extreme scenario of an outdoor air temperature of 32°C, clear sky, and 40% RH with a gentle breeze constant over 15 days was simulated. This enabled the definition of key design features and the examination of the effectiveness of designs.
