The new Heart Center at Bonn University Hospital is one of the most modern heart clinics in Europe. The new building, with a total construction cost of €190 million, brings together the specialist departments of cardiac surgery and cardiology as an independent unit to form an interdisciplinary unit. For historical reasons, the buildings were scattered across the campus and were no longer up to date. With a usable area of 13,000 m² – the size of 1 ½ soccer fields – there are now more than 1,000 rooms, 180 beds, five operating rooms, and teaching and research areas.
Alpha IC took over commissioning coordination in early summer 2023. After a comprehensive basic evaluation, the experts at Alpha IC developed a structured commissioning concept for the complex hospital building. On this basis, the team carried out the successful commissioning in close coordination with specialist planners, experts, builders, and users. Technical approvals and central inspections to ensure compliance with building regulations and operator requirements were organized and supervised by Alpha IC.
Alpha IC project manager Florian Dubisch emphasizes: “The late commissioning during the course of the project was a challenge. But we managed to avoid energy losses and malfunctions through systematic, cross-trade interconnection tests. Thanks to early coordination and interface clarification, unnecessary dismantling and additional costs were also avoided.”
Early coordination and clarification of interfaces, as well as ensuring that operating personnel received proper training, were crucial for the efficient use of the technical infrastructure. It is no coincidence that the mission of our Alpha IC commissioning team is: “Safe handover, trouble-free operation, and satisfied users right from the start!” Work on the new heart center began in 2019. The move to the new building in a central location on the hospital campus will take place in January 2026 (Inbetriebnahmemanagement & Energieoptimierung: Alpha IC).
